JeanMarie Murphy the founder of Engaging Your Wholeness

Jean Marie in her art studio at ICB Sausalito, California.

As part of recovering from years of bookkeeping (though, I was teaching yoga as a hobby) JeanMarie entered the world of mind-body medicine earning her RYT 500 as a Kripalu yoga teacher and, is also a cardiac certified yoga teacher (Satchidananda Ashram). As her version of post graduate work, she received certification from The Academy for Guided Imagery and The Muscular Therapy Institute.  In these extensive multi-year trainings she developed her passion for psychoneuroimmunology, neuroscience, anatomy and physiology.

After years of working in hospital and hospice settings, her focus of enhancing somatic awareness and consciousness embodiment has shifted to working with individuals taking up the leadership of their lives. She teaches Yoga Nidra as a process called Engaging Your Wholeness and a specialized pelvic floor somatic yoga series for women transitioning into peri-menopause and menopause.

In 2000, she combined her business background with her wholistic healing experience and founded a non-profit healing center called Taking Refuge. The center provided weekly classes in Yoga, T’ai Chi, Qigong and Feldenkrais and offered 2 low-cost alternative therapy clinics, utilizing acupuncture and hands-on Feldenkrais, to individuals living with life threatening illness and their caregivers (their medical team and family-friend team) as part of a program called The Caregiver Connection.

In 2005, JeanMarie joined her life’s experience and education with a Poet, expanding his mission and vision of the healing capacities of creative writing and traditional medicine, when they worked hand in hand. She developed and managed various poetry and prose programs in Hospital/Health Care facilities and writing retreats in a variety of settings.

She is a graduate of The Muscular Therapy Institute which developed a curriculum of muscular therapy and somatic coaching that included influences from Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s groundbreaking observations on the relationship between emotional trauma and physical distress, the principles for establishing and maintaining effective movement habits as described by F. M. Alexander and Orthopedic Medicine assessment techniques developed by the well-known British Physician, James Cyriax, M.D.

She is also a graduate of The Academy of Guided Imagery, a post-graduate training provider for health professionals and the nation’s only comprehensive, integrated curriculum for teaching Interactive Guided Imagery. As a clinical approach to mind-body healing, IGI incorporates innovative principles and techniques from conventional and Ericksonian hypnosis, Neurolinguistic Programming, psychosynthesis, and Jungian active imagination. AGI’s process adds a unique interactive component that enhances the patient’s own ability to participate in their health and healing, transforming the therapeutic relationship into one of supportive collaboration and successful self-actualization.
